5 and 20 Drumsticks

There was a time when any Thanksgiving editorial worth a small drumstick had to discuss the pros and cons of President Roosevelt's New Deal Turkey Trot, and whether or not such a holiday shift was in the best interests of society. An early Thanksgiving, went the argument, was convenient for the Christmas Card and affiliated industries, but worked hardships on the farmer who fattened his fowl. If the editorial writer were sufficiently steamed up, he might lose all sight of mince-meat, hard sauce, and associated victuals in his chase after a good solution.

The CRIMSON did not participate in these discussions, perhaps assuming at the time that no editorial whatsoever was a blessing more in accord with the season than any argument could hope to be. By now it seems that society has withstood the ordeal, and the question of "when" is as dry as last year's wishbone. What about the purpose of thanksgiving?

Now is certainly the time to heap praises on the team for coming through Saturday and ending the Seven Year Itch. The Yale victory in itself deserves a holiday; that it is coincident with Thanksgiving is all the more appropriate.

There is no doubt that the Democratic sweep should come in for thanks, but should the blessing be large or small? There are some die-hards who will cat another kind of bird over Thanksgiving--for them the Democratic sweep is a small blessing indeed. Others will think it a large blessing, but only if the turkey is cheap; it may be that even staunch Democrats will be forced to cat crow eventually to save money. In any case, thanks are in order, now the election is over, that the initials G-O-P were not dynamited into the Sever Quadrangle.

Last of all, thanks to the powers concerned for no seating arrangements in middle and upper group courses. For the first time since its inception, co-education is proving its worth. This is no reason to slight the dark meat, plum pudding, and everything else in a Thanksgiving dinner--that would be foolish indeed. But before all men leave their classes and Gather Together, let there be praise, blessings, and amens for the kind official who permitted the Radcliffe girl to choose a seat and neighbor. This is reason for heartfelt thanksgiving.
