Professors F. O. Matthiessen and John D. Wild both stressed internationalism in their keynote talks at last night's celebration of International Students Day by the Young Progressives.
"The young Progressive is a member of the non-Communist left," Professor Matthiessen told his Harvard Hall audience, but admitted that "I know there are members of the Communist left in this room."
In his speech defining "democracy," Professor Matthiessen tagged the press as the real enemy of liberalism in the United States, and urged young Progressives to speak without fear, even though their party has been consistently "smeared by the press."
Professor Wild asserted that some of eastern Europe's "magnificent" efforts to rebuild are a direct result of the infiltration of communism, "an idealogy which is now regarded as dangerous by the press." But he stated that it is an ideology "which must have something sound at his core."
Wild concluded by remarking, "No fair-minded person can see a conflict between our traditional civil liberties and the natural rights of man; the right to work, leisure, education."
