Stocking Fails To Recognize Yard Muggers

George W. Stocking '49 thumbed through a photo album of Exeter men yesterday but failed to identify the three students who attacked him in the Yard Wednesday night.

Acting on an unintentional lead, the Deans Office had narrowed down the possible assailants to Exeter men at the College. Stocking was distributing HYD-John Reed Society fliers when the trio jumped him near Wigglesworth Hall, beating him and smashing his glasses.

The leaflets were later found in Wigglesworth E-21. Judson T. Shaplin, assistant dean of Freshmen, called in the room's occupants yesterday and told Stocking that their alibis seemed to check.

Know Assailants

John Cramer '52 and Stephen E. Hedberg '52 claimed they were at the movies while Peter A. Brooke '52 said he was at a jam session. But all of them admitted that "they knew the men who did it."

During their talk with Shaplin, the students dropped a hint that the assailants were from Exeter. It was this that prompted Stocking to run through the Exeter photos. "There were too many pictures for me to point out the right person," he said last night. "All I could do was eliminate a few."
