Lining Them Up

Basketball

Basketball manager Bon Wilson sat on the sidelines on the top floor of the Blockhouse yesterday jotting down everything that was happening in the daily intra-squad scrimmage. "With all that talent, I don't see why shouldn't really go this year," he reasoned. "I'm convinced we've got a much better squad this year, and I think there'll be a lot more teamwork between the players."

Coach Barclay, who has had his Varsity athletes in uniform since October 18, isn't quite so optimistic, but appears satisfied with the team's progress. "We're not trying to develop as fast as we did last year," he revealed yesterday, "but for this stage of the season, we're coming along pretty well."

Starting Lineup Indefinite

Who will take the floor when the Crimson opens against Brown at Providence on December 4? "We won't know that until the next cut a least," Barclay explained, "when we've had a chance to look over some of the football players who will report after the Yale game on November 20." These men include Captain Chip Gannon, Bill Henry, and Jim Kenary.

New men--and there are lots of them--may oust some of last year's holdovers before the first snowfall, but on the basis of past performances, here's the way the Varsity may line up on December 4. Two Seniors, Captain Chip Gannon (provided he can shift gears from greensward to hardwood in time) and Walt McCurdy, will probably be at the guards. McCurdy, who played varsity ball for St. John's Invitation Tourney team in 1944 and led Iowa Seahawk scoring during the war seems to be fitting into Barclay's style of play better than he did last year.

Tail Forwards

Up front, it may be John Rockwell at center, flanked by Sophomore Ed Smith and either Bill Prior or Jim Gabler, another Sophomore. These men average six-five. Smith hit 20 points a game as captain of last year's freshman five. Rockwell, a former all-state forward at Wabash High, Indiana, checked in on October 8 at 208 pounds but hopes to get down to 195 before the season starts. He never went below 203 last year.

Elsewhere, among the 20 men who survived the first cut last week, John Richards and Dick Covey appear capable of breaking into the lineup at guard, and Bob Bramhall, who played alongside Wyndol Gray on the 1945 Crimson NCAA. Tourney quintet, looks good at forward. Cliff Crosby and Steve Davis may also help out. But Coach Barclay emphasized the fact that no starting position is sewed up as yet. Every man on the squad has a chance to be among the five that lead off against Brown on December 4.
