An heroic goal line stand by a game Lowell House team haited the Kirkland steamroller abruptly yesterday and the Bellboys went on to hand K. House a stunning 7-6 defeat. On the neighboring field crippled Eliot showed he signs of weakness as it walloped a bafiled band of Loverett bunnies 19-7.
Behind by six points at the half, the Bellboys swept down field the first time they grabbed the ball in the third stanza on a series of tricky spinbucks, pitchouts, and passes. A spectacular pass play from Bob Woodruff to Fred Donohoo brought the ball to the Kirkland one yard line.
Then as the Deacons massed nine men in the line, the Bellboys scored on a flashy buck lateral wherein the fullback palmed the ball to the quarterback who shovelled it off to tailback Johnny Goldsmith flying around the end. Goldsmith scored standing up. Another Woodruff to Donohoe pass was good for the point and the margin of victory.
The devastating running of George Galphin and Jim Rossiter shattered the Leverett defenses in the second half, and led undefeated Eliot to its fourth straight win in the Inter-House League by a 19 to 7 count.
Also behind at the half, the Mastodons poured over two quick touchdowns, one on sheer power plays, and the other after an intercepted pass by Roger Pugh. Rossiter went over both times first on a buck and then on an end sweep.
