With only one touchdown scored in two games so far, no outside observer would offer much for the season's chances of the Freshman football team. But there's a very good reason why Coach Henry Lumar wouldn't be at all surprised if at any moment, his squad suddenly came to life and discovered the secret of winning football.
Lamar can't help but liken this year's Yardling squad to the Freshmen of 1946--a team composed of such present Varsity performers as Jim Kenary, Hal Moffle, George Goodrich, Dick Guldera, Doug Bradlee and Rocky Stone. In action, size, and experience the present squad bears a startling resemblance to his 1946 team.
But the comparison goes beyond individuals. Both the 1946 and 1948 elevens dropped early games to Andover and Holy Cross in similar games and by similar scores. In its third game against Exeter the 1946 squad gained a tie and then amazed everyone with a string of three straight triumphs over Dartmouth, Brown, and Yale--all previously unbeaten squads. Thus if the current eleven shows well in its own Exeter game today, it will be an indication that the theory is well founded.
In the line of personalities, any number of men on today's Yardling eleven could develop into Varsity stars after two and three years from now. Almost every position in the lineup reveals a number of candidates, but it is still too early to find the real standouts.
In the Freshman backfield there are a half a dozen prospects who could be bidding for Varsity spots next season. Top among these are Captain Carroll Lowenstein and Bob Ray. Lowenstein, the squad's diminutive quarterback, comes from Huntington Prep where he learned plenty about bullseye passing and field generalship. Ray, a big fullback from New Hampton Prep, is at present the team's number one man on the ground.
Along the line such men as tackles Bill Holbrook, Fred Raverby, Bob Thompson, and Pete Hill; guards Bob Moulla, Lew Gordon, and Paul Balcom; and center Bill Frothingham are imposing. Even if the team never does get started, which is doubtful, these and other Freshmen will be well worth watching.
