Sculling Races Start in Two Weeks

Six Classes Set Up For Singles Regatta Starting August 11

University wide sculling competition in six classes will begin in two weeks, Coach Blake Dennson announced last night, as a promise of relief from summer ennui on the Charles waterfront.

The spread of intramural fever is expected to reach tennis and swimming shortly, with plans now being formulated by Norman W. Fradd, assistant director of Physical Training, for tournaments in the two other popular summer sports.

Dennison's sculling program follows the pattern of last year's informal races which had four divisions among single scull oarsmen and separate classes for compromise sculls and wherrles. Rowing--in heats where necessary--will start Monday, August 11, and continue daily to the finals on Thursday, August 14.

Half-Mile Course

The races will be run over a half-mile course downstream, from below the Weeks Memorial Bridge to a finish below the River Street Bridge.

Although the Darcey Memorial Cup is saved for the results of spring singles rowing, Fradd announced that rewards will not be lacking for summer competitions since the H.A.A. will award a medal to the winner in each department.

Among the four single scull racing divisions, Senior Singles is limited to members of the exclusive Thirty Minute Club at the Weld Boat Club. The admission requirement is to row to the Anderson Bridge and back--a total of four miles--in 30 minutes or less.

Junior and Novices

The Junior Singles event is customarily open to oarsmen who fail to quality for the Thirty Minute Club but have had at least two seasons of singles experience.

Entrants in the Novice Singles class must have had less than two seasons of singles rowing and the fourth single scull class is for men who weigh 155 pounds or less.

The fifth class is composed of even less proficient oarsmen who will race in compromise sculls while the beginners will have a special event in their wherries.

Last summer, a total of 62 Weld habituees entered the six sculling events.
