Wellesley's petite Freshman crew threw its shirt into the intercollegiate rowing ring last night with a challenge to College oarsmen.
The girls will take on the heat the College can offer but were vague about giving up their T-shirts if beaten. "We've got what it takes," said coxswain "ReeDee" (rhymes with Tweedy) Dorsey, Wellesley '50, who learned to row in a Jersey cranberry beg.
The purple clad class of '50 called off with the college championship in the Waban regatta last week, the first time in 31 years of racing that a Freshman eight has accomplished the feat. "Our time was 1:18," ReeDee announced proudly, "and we can beat anything with oars over the Waban distance." Nobody knew just how long the Waban distance is.
Set Up Training Table
Down in the village where the Freshmen live, rowing activity centers about "Ma" Gerholz's Croften training table, where three of the championships eight got their spinach. "What Delilah did to Samson, what Frankle did to Johnny, are nothing compared to what we can do to Harvard," says Ma.
Officials at Weld Boat House viewed the challenge with dyspeptic eye last night. Their months still carried the bitter taste of defeat at the feminine hands of a Radcliffe crew in 1945. Even a bobrassiered board from M.I.T. beat them to the Life cameraman that day.
