GREENVILLE, S.C., May 14--R. Carlos Hurd, Sr., a 45-year-old taxicab dispatcher, was named in statements today by three of the 31 defendants as the man who fired shotgun volleys through the head of a gashed and beaton Negro, 24-year-old Willie Earle.
Hurd, one of those on trial previously had been named as the trigger man in the state's indietments.
A statement attributed to George M. Sovington, a taxi driver, and read to the jury, said that Hurd shouted "Let's get it over with," shot the Negro, reloaded and shot him again.
Statements introduced by the state as coming from Walter T. Crawford and Henry Vernon Culbertson, other defendants, also said Hurd shot the Negro.
These statements were among several alleged confessions by various defendants to varying participation in the mob-slaying, and introduced today into the murder trial of 28 cab drivers and three business men. They were introduced over defense objections.
They are accused of knifing and fatally shooting Earle.
