While the Newburyport plan won further adherents throughout the nation, the only store in the Square area to make an across-the-board price cut, Brine's Sporting Goods, reported that decreasing prices have produced a considerable jump in volume.
"We feel that the plan is working out well, and we intend to stick with it," was the official word on the 10-percent price slash at the store. "Our customers are all pleased that we have followed President Truman's voluntary price reduction program, and the resulting increased volume of sales has more than made up for our diminished profit margin."
Meanwhile, another local store joined the ranks of these merchants in the Square who have made partial price cuts, when Fred Olsson's Art Shot instituted "a 15-percent discount on any framed picture or photo stand in the store." However, the Art Shop, maintained its prices on all other items, including paintings, at their current level.
