Twenty-nine-year-old Julian S. Schwinger, associate professor of Physics, will become the youngest full professor in 17 years, when his appointment, announced last night by the University, takes effect on July 1.
At the same time the appointment of Amado Alonso, visiting lecturer on Spanish, as professor of Romance Languages and Literatures was announced.
Less than eight years after gaining his Ph.D. at Columbia University, Schwinger has become a recognized authority on nuclear physics. While on the staff of Purdue University from 1941 to 1945, he did secret war research at the University of Chicago and at M.I.T.'s Radiation Laboratory.
Did Research in California
Born in 1918, Schwinger was a National Research Fellow in 1939-40, and a Research Associate under J. Robert Oppenheimer at the University of California in 1940-41. He joined the University faculty in 1945.
Alonzo was formerly Director of the Institute of Philology at the University of Buenos Aires. He was born in Spain in 1896 and received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Madrid in 1928.
