"Whenever snow falls before Thanks giving, thew ski team has its most successful season." Epitomized by this maxim are the woes that have beset the Cantabridgian hickory jockeys since they were first organized in the early thirties.
Handicapped by the absence of open slopes and slalom courses, the team has surmounted the local snow lack through the years and reached top form in 1940 and 41.
Now back under official Athletic Association harness once again, the team, under Coach Bill Halsey, is entering its second post-war season and, if the early snow is any indication, should come out with stocking caps flying.
A manifestation of the local urge to go out and beat Dartmouth at its own game, the ski team was first started on an informal basis under auspices of the Ski Club. The team now forms the nucleus of the club and uses the club cabin at Pinkham Notch for its Franconia meets. Training starts in November with road work, and shifts to the Belmont Golf Course following the first snow. More extensive training will take place this year following the Franconia meet next weekend, when the team will practice jumping, cross-country and downhill work at Putney, Vermont.
Captained by Graham Taylor, the present team includes Sewell Faulkner, Jerry Genn, Laurie Griffin, Rod Nordblom, Frank Seabury, from last year's starting team, plus newcomer Ole Bogert.
George Shedd, last year's captain, will be with the team until February. The schedule runs through the spring vacation with meets almost every weekend, and several post-season races in addition with dates unannounced.
