Two potential starters and a first-line replacement will definitely be out of Saturday's Virginia content, Coach Harlow learned last night after practice.
Guard Nick Rodis and end Bob Kennedy, both on the first eleven for the Western Maryland game, and end Stretch Mazzone will probably not make the trip to Charlottesville, according to the doctors.
Harlow had good news in the afternoon's drill, for the A squad performed smoothly despite continuing bruises from the B.U., encounter. "The team looked better than I expected," said Harlow. "They're still very tired--stiff and sore--but we ought to be able to get back to full-speed practices by tomorrow."
Gannon Still Weak
Chip Gannon, still weak from the injury that sidelined him for a quarter jury that sidelined him for a quarter of last weekend's game, ran well in a signal drill but was excused before the end of the afternoon. Gibby Warren took over his wingback slot, with Herb O'Connell moving up to fill in for Warren in the B backfield combination.
Placement specialist Bucky Harrison worked out with the Varsity, temporarily forsaking the Jayvee and Kirkland House elevens to provide kicking insurance for the squad in case Emil Drvaric's injury does not mend in time for the game Saturday. Yesterday's prediction by the doctors was that Drvaric would probably be able to make the trip, but he did not join the regular drills for the second successive day.
The Lights Again
Lights were again the order for the tail end of the lengthened session, which included dummy defensive maneuvers against Virginia offenses as spotted by Chief Boston and Henry Lamar over the last two weeks.
Jim Kenary, Chuck Roche, Ken O'Donneil, and Gannon ran through their passing repertoire in a long hurling workout, and all the backs went through the usual signals briskly.
Color was added to the practice by the presence of civilian-clothed Ed Davis and Ned Dewey, who held down the tackle slots on last year's Harlow eleven.
The A team lineup yesterday:
Le, Hill; lt, Pierce; lg, Drennan; c, Glynn; rg, Feinberg; rt, Houston; re, Flynn; qb, O'Donnell; tb, Kenary; wb, Gannon; fb, Moravec.
