To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
I have always thought of Harvard University as an institution imbued with the spirit of the search for truth and with the seriousness of purpose of its students. In my first few weeks here as a graduate student, however, I have been impressed unfavorably with the great degree of rudeness displayed by students in large lecture halls towards the lecturer and their fellow students.
I realize that large enrollment and overcrowded facilities are contributing actors, but to me they don't seem to condone such practices as rustling papers and closing notebooks before the lecturer has finished speaking, and in the case of substitute instructors, walking out on them in the midst of the class. In all fairness to those who are attempting to obtain the fullest amount of instruction possible from each lecture, I urge that you take an editorial stand so that a courteous atmosphere may be restored to the classrooms of Harvard.
