Nichols Swamped by Freshman Hoopsters; Jayvees Capture Fifth

Both the Freshman and Jayvee basketball teams romped to easy victories Saturday on the Indoor Athletic Building courts as Coach Moo Berg's Yardlings overwhelmed Nichols Junior College, 62 to 27, and Coach Hal Kopp's Jayvees out-distanced Newman Prep, 53 to 33.

In the afternoon game, eleven Yardlings participated in the runaway encounter which saw every player on the winning team break into the scoring column. Pritchard of Nichols and Freshman left-forward John Rockwell led in point totals with 16 and 15, in the fifth win in six starts for Berg's men.

Crimson Loads from Start

With every Jayvee scoring, Kopp's squad, fronting a coordinated attack and alert rebound play, methodically were down a fast-playing Newman five, which in spite of some spectacular shooting from far out in the court early in the game, showed its lack of practice in failing to produce integrated teamwork when playing close to the hoop. Having once conceded a lead to the Crimson in the first quarter, the prop schoolers were never able to catch up.

Bob Crotty starred for the Jayvees, playing all but three minutes of the clash, in which a taller and heavier Crimson quintet committed 26 fouls as against 18 for Newman. Top man in the tally department was the visitor's Dalley with 14 points, followed by Crotty and teammate Dave McGiffert with ten and nine.
