SANTA MONICA, CALIF. -- Cigar-smoking Eugene Talmadge, vacationing here after his recent nomination as Governor of Georgia, took a tolerant view of Ku Klux Klan activities today.
Talmadge drawled he didn't know enough about the Klan to decide whether he approves or disapproves of it. He said he was the "only candidate in Georgia who wasn't a Klansman."
The lanky governor nomineo called a press conference at his hotel here to deny columnist Drew Pearson's charge that he was supported by the Ku Klux Klan.
"Drew Pearson seems to know a lot more than I do about me," he said. "I am not a member of the Klan, never have been and don't ever expect to be."
