Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., '38, 28-year-old newly-appointed associate professor, has been awarded the 1946 Pulitzer Prize in history for his book, "The Age of Jackson," trustees of Columbia University announced tonight.
The book, which has sold more than 30,000 copies, grew out of six Lowell lectures which Schlesinger delivered when he was only 24. The author is a son of Dr. A. M. Schlesinger, Francis Lee Higginson Professor of History.
The Pulitzer award carries a stipend of $500.
Among the other winners were:
National reporting--Edward A. Harris of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "for his articles on the tidewater oil situation, which contributed to the nationwide opposition to the appointment and confirmation of Edwin W. Pauley as Under-secretary of the Navy.
Local reporting--William L. Laurence of the New York Times "for his eye-witness account of the atom-bombing of Nagasaki."
Biography--Linnie Marsh Wolfe, "Son of the Wilderness."
Music--Leo Sowerby for "The Canticle of the Sun."
Play--Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse for "The State of the Union."
