150 Pound Shell Nips Varsity in Trial Race

Shakeup Is Foreseen by Bolles As Tradition Is Shattered

Bert Hayue's not-so diminutive 150-pounders yesterday flouted the backs of their oars to the varsity crew, as they shattered an ancient tradition of heavy-weight predominance in the Charles River practice sessions. Although the varsity shaved its target of 9:30 for the 1 3/4 mile course, they trailed the 150s by three lengths after 11/4 miles and crossed the finishline a length and a half behind the jayvees.

"There's going to be an open season for replacements in the first crew," Coach Tom Bolles commented dryly in Newell Boat House after yesterday afternoon's workout. "Despite the fact that this was our best time of the year, in many ways it was our worst relative performance," he said.

Bolles noted that his varsity had a lot of hard work ahead of it before it will be ready for the regular season opening on May 4.
