Quintet Tops WPI 68 to 47 In Tune-up for Brown Tilt

Decsi Paces Crimson With 23 Point Total

With Lou Decsi's 23 tallies setting the pace, Coach Stahl's crack five extended its new winning streak to three in humbling the hapless Worcester Poly quintet by a score of 68 to 47 Wednesday evening before a crowd of 400 at the Indoor Athletic Building. The Jayvees made it a doubleheader as they rolled to a 54 to 34 win over the Lowell Textile School.

As a contest, Wednesday's affair was strictly on the dull side, but it did prove two things to college rooters: first, the squad was sadly in need of a fast scrimmage before the Brown game; second the Stahlmen are still very much on the pace in the contest for the mythical New England crown which was thrown back into the ring by Rhode Inland State's convincing win over Doggle Julian's Holy Cross Crusaders.

Brown In and Out

The team that Brown will send against the Crimson squad tomorrow is definitely of the in and out variety. Heralded as one of the top fives in New England, the Bruins failed to click after their 58 to 34 trouncing by Harvard early in the season, and since then have lost to Tufts, Yale, Holy Cross, and Connecticut, while beating Connecticut once, Tufts once, WPI and MIT.

The Wednesday contest was only slightly more interesting as a scrimmage. Working the score of 17 to 10 at the first quarter, 31 to 21 at the half, the quintet accelerated with 16 points in the third quarter and finally coasted to 68 points, with the second team filling in most of the half. At no time after the first five minutes did Worcester even have a chance, as the work of Decsi under the boards and Saul Mariaschin and John Gantt on the floor effectively squelched all incipient WPI threats.

Decsi Leads Squad

For the first time this season, Decsi led the team in scoring, netting a total of 23 points. His fine work under the basket, in addition to his usual talents under the backboards, easily made him the most valuable man on the floor. Teammate Wyndol Gray, definitely suffering an "off night", scored only 13 points, six of them in a minute and a half of the last quarter; Johnny Gantt and Saul Mariaschin rounded out the double figures brigade with 11 apiece.

What has made sports fans take note of Brown, tomorrow's opponent, was their

fine performance against Rhode Island State, as the George Grimshaw-led team forced the conquers of Holy Cross into overtime before succumbing 69 to 67. If they are on form tomorrow, the Stahlmen will be hard pressed to win; if they are out, victory number four in the current victory streak is assured
