Lining Them Up

"Every other wrestling team in the country but us seems to be loaded," was the word from Clarence chief Boston, head coach of the Crimson matmen, yesterday afternoon in the Indoor Athletic Building. Lack of enough good men in the lighter weights, inexperience, and a heavier than usual schedule against the best teams in the East are street other reasons why Boston is pessimistic abut the changes for his team to have a successful season this year.

With no lettermen from pre-war teams returning, Boston in building his squad almost from scratch and dolefully admits that "this year we are probably just going along for the ride." "If we win any of our major meets this year, I will be satisfied," year will give the boys lots of experience, and by next year we ought to have a hot outfit.

Closer examination of the material working out every afternoon on the third floor of the Indoor Athletic Building reveals several outstanding grapplers out for the team along with ten or twelve good but inexperienced operatives. The squad is definitely not a balanced one, however, and every night Chief says a short prayer in the hope that a couple of good lightweights will appear.

In the 121-pound class the material is especially slim with only two or three men out for the Varsity position. The next class up, 128, present approximately the same picture unless the injured shoulder of Neal Holt, a former duke grappler, heals up in time for the opening meet in January. Frank Trinkie, who wrestled for Swarthmore two years ago and Harvard last year, is being counted on to fill the otherwise weak 136-pound position.

The middle weights are pretty well dominated by returning members of last winter's team, but Boston and Assistant Coach jay Thomas emphasize that no position on the team is definitely filled. At the 145-pound class former Kent captain and a member of the two previous Crimson teams, Frank Tyng, is the leader contender while Dan Ray, Poly Prep captain two years ago, is moving up from the 145-pound class he filled last year to the 155 pound slot. Battling Ray for this position is an Exeter wrestler, John Cassady.

Don Louria, last year's captain who also heads this year's team, is set for 165, probably one of the strongest positions on the team. At 175 pounds is Pete Fuller, an excellent amateur boxer as well as a star wrestler at Dartmouth two years ago. This fall Fuller played fullback for Boston's undefeated Jayvee eleven. Joe Hawryluk is also out for 175.

Jayvee and Varsity football players are the main contenders for the heavyweight position. Led by Varsity tackle, Howie Houston, they also include Jayvee gridders jack Chilcott, Ken Middendorf, and Bill Sharp.
