Trackmen Split In Pair of Relays

Defeat Rhode Island in First Event; Brown Victor Over Both in Second Indoor Race

In its first competitive trial of the season, Coach Jaakko Mikkola's Varsity relay team copped a one-mile event from Rhode Island State and lost a three-way two-mile relay to Rhode Island and Brown yesterday afternoon in Briggs Cage.

Taking to the boards first for the Crimson was the one-mile relay quartet consisting of Jim Wheeler, A1 Ruby, Dave Hamblett and Wes Flint, running in that order. Behind in the first quarter-lap, wheeler passed the Rhode Island lead-off man on the first turn and Mikkola's baton carriers were never trailing again. Ending the third leg, Rhode Island's Cashman spurted to within a few yards of Hamblett, but a burst of speed by Flint put the race on ice, with a time of 3:31.

In the two-mile relay, the second and final event, brown's speedy squad kept well ahead of its two opponents throughout most of the race after getting off to an early lead, threatened only for a brief interval in the second leg. The Crimson's Archie Lyon, Cliff Wharton, Arnold Edelman, and Frank Gurley finished third, Gurley crossing the line in 8:01 after Brown had finished in 7:50.9, a scant five yards ahead of Rhode Island.
