Undefeated and untied in ten games going into yesterday's contest with Yale, the Crimson Freshman soccer team saw its hopes for an undefeated season burled in the mud of the Business School Field by a fighting '50 eleven from down New Haven way by the score of 1 to 0. For three and one half periods the score was deadlocked 0 to 0, with neither squad having much of an advantage, but half-way through te fourth frame the aquamarine boosters counted when their right wing, Dick Griggs, headed the ball into the nets.
The rain which inundated Soldiers Field did just as effective a job on the Business School soccer fields, making the footing extremely slippery and turning the goals into little better than mud puddles. As a result, the action was dotted with sliding collisions and awkward falls, but in spite of the fact that the ball was water-logged and difficult to handle, booming kicks featured the play.
Elis Score on Pass from Wing
The Eli score came on an attack which the Bulldogs developed down the left side of the field. Charged by the Crimson left halfback, the Yale left wing lifted a long center from the side of the field, which was headed in by Griggs cutting from his right wing position.
Determined to get back into the contest, the Yardlings pressed the attack right up to the final whistle, but were turned back time after time by the sterling play of the Blue fullbacks.
For most of the game the Elis were in control and pressed continually for a score in the first half. Only several brilliant saves by Johnny Batchelder in the goal for the Crimson prevented the Blue from counting earlier.
The starting lineup for the Crimson was: Batchelder, g.; Harrop, l.f.; Scully, r.f.; Mudd, r.h.; Bell, c.h.; Langmann, l.h.; Spivak, o.r.; Morgan, i.r.; Chen, c.f.; Gilbert, i.l.; Register, o.l., Substitutes were: Rimberg, Joseph, Bailey, Chase, Machico, Wallace, Toppan, Carroll, and Forster. The manager was Peter Toulmin.
