To the Editors of the Service News:
The news story of September 25, concerning draft deferments for college men, is incorrect as far as can be discovered by talking with State Headquarters.
The new regulation does not provide that college students my finish the term they are in if they are under twenty years of age. It provides that college students who entered college before their eighteenth birthday, and who receive a notice of induction during a term in which they are actively in attendance, may ask for postponement of induction until the end of the term. If the board finds that a man entered before he was eighteen, and was in attendance during a term, and in good standing, they will grat postpoement to the end of the term.
It does not matter how many terms ago a man entered college, so long as he did it before his eighteenth birthday.
The administration of this ruling is still in a formative stage, however, and new regulations may come along at any time. On the whole, any student who gets an induction order during this term had probably better consult me, and that is most easily done by calling at the Lowell House secretary's office, AA entry, between 2:30 and 5 in the afternoon. In some cases where the situation is not obviously within the provisions of this new regulation, it may prove worth while to ask the board for consideration. Elliott Perkins, War Service Adviser.
