Bad weather, V-J day, and a cancellation all attributed to the inactivity of the Varsity nine last week. In place of the scheduled game with the Boston Coast Guard Friday, which was cancelled after the sailors had been given special leaves, an inter-squad contest was held. The "A" team drubbed the "B" squad 10 to 1 behind the three hit pitching of Jack Wallace. "Lefty" Knowies gave up eight bingles including a round tripper by Mal Allen in the third inning with no one on.

With three games left to play the Crimson's record now stands at five wins and three defeats. But gazing at the scorebook, the record is not so good as it may look. The team has a low batting average of .188. The greatest fault is the failure to hit in the pinches; in the second Holy Cross game the Stahlmen got three men on base with no one out but couldn't produce a run. Don Swegan is pacing the batters with a better than average mark of .358. Herb Eckenroth follows him with a percentage of .333; but these players are the only .300 hitters on the club.

Poor fielding is another difficulty plaguing Coach Floyd Stahl. Twenty-two miscues have been made by the Varsity; many of them coming in critical moments. The loose playing has accounted for nine of the 28 runs scored against the Crimson, and other errors would have let more opposing players cross the plate if it had not been for the tight pitching on the part of Wallace.

Although the Crimson has run up five wins and scored 41 runs, it has fallen down against the one really tough opponent that was on the schedule, that being Holy Cross. There is no doubt that the Crusaders are one of the best teams around, but it is also evident that the local nine could have done much better than it did. In the first game with the Purple the Crimson blew the game on errors; in the second it failed to make the most of the opportunities offered. The five victories registered have been over weak and on the most part inexperienced teams, who played worse ball than the Varsity. In evidence of this statement is the fact than 14 of the 41 tallies scored by Harvard have been handled one on a silver platter.

Yesterday the Crimson played the strong Brown nine, and on Saturday Tufts will be the opponent at Medford. The last encounter of the season will be against Brown on September 1 at Providence. The Brains have had a fairly good season although Holy Cross best them in the early days of the summer.
