Nine Shades Jumbos 2-1 in Season's Finale

Closky Double Drives Across Winning Run

Catching hold of a three-two pitch in the last of the ninth, Arnie Closky, Crimson shortstop, bauged a double between Jumbo right and center fielders to chase home Jack Wallace from second with the winning run, breaking up a 1 to 1 tie Saturday at Soldiers Field.

Coming after John Coppinger and Mel Allen had flied and bounced out, Wallace's grounder to the left side seemed to end the inning, but the Tufts shortstop fired the ball into the ground, enabling the pitcher to reach second and making way for Closky's game-winning clout.

Tufts was first to break the scoring ice when, in the third inning, a resounding triple to center and a long fly to right pushed across the only earned run of the encounter.

Harvard bats, which had previously rolled up such winning margins as 10-0, 11-0, 10-2, and 10-0, came through again in the last half of the inning, if not as lustily as usual. Ken Crumrine, after receiving a free ticket to first, worked his way around the bases by stealing second, taking third on Jack Forte's roller, and scoring easily as Art Conlon's grounder was fumbled.

For the second time in a row, the Stahlmen turned in a flawless performance in the field, highlighted in the sixth when Forte speared a hard drive to right and prevented a run from crossing the plate.

Wallace, whose hurling has spearheaded the team all year, turned in another fine performance. Aside from his work at the plate, he bore down in the clutch to keep Tufts under control, and fanned nine of the visiting batters.

Finishing the spring schedule with a record of eight wins and only three losses, Coach Floyd Stahl summed up the eleven encounters as being "the best season in a good many years."

A complete tabulation of undergraduate sports activities for the past term will be published in the next issue of the SERVICE NEWS, to appear Thursday, June 21.
