Three Varsity shells will dip into the ice-free waters of the Charles tomorrow of the first practice workouts of the $45 spring season. Jayvee crews will try out their oars two weeks later.
Coach Bert Haines reports that over a prospective rowers turned out for the normal Varsity crews meeting on Tuesday, and the same number showed up at the Newell Boat House, where practice has been going on in the tank for several days.
Coach Haines seems confident of a successful season, but he warns that, "I am starting out with a very green bunch. Become of them have never been in a shell before." The Varsity crew will be strengthened by the return of three former members of Crimson shells, 2, John Kettele, Jr. V-12; 3, Thomas A. Raymond '47; and cox, Daniel S. Paul '46.
Conditioning must start as soon as possible for the spring regattas at which both Navy and Cornell will have varsity shells entered. Each of these colleges as opened preparation for training under meet conditions. The races will be contested in the Charles River Basin over a mile and three-quarters course.
