Mather Hall Vacated Second Time in Year

None of the 30 Freshmen who waited in restless exile at Mather Hall earlier this summer before receiving permanent House assignments are still there and, except for 32 officers of the Army Air Forces Statistical school, who will leave July 31, Mather is empty for the second time in a hectic wartime career of one year.

In June of 1943 Leverett House, of which Mather Hall is a part, was closed to civilians in order to make room for the first units of the ASTP. Two groups, one studying Personnel Psychology, the other Advanced Phases of Foreign Area and Language Studies, were quartered at Leverett and Winthrop in time to start classes on June 14.

Then, during August and September of 1943, 790 men arrived from STAR units all over the country to continue their studies under the staff of the Overseas Administrators School as Companies C, D, and E. Four months later several hundred of these men finished their training and were replaced by 240 new specialists. These Foreign Area and Language Students again were housed in Mather, which they vacated last June.

At the end of last trimester Dunster House was closed in expectation of a civilian enrollment not much greater than 500. When 75 extra Freshmen, most of whom would soon be drafted, appeared, those who could not immediately be sent to Adams or Lowell were unceremoniously stationed in Mather.

Finally, on July 10 another overflow this time from the AAF Stat School arrived for the tenure of their four week.
