In view of recent misunderstandings, it seems appropriate to re-state the position which The Harvard Service News occupies in relation to the war-time University and personnel.
In May, 1943, the retiring Crimson board made the following statement:
"The Harvard that was had need of a Crimson. Now the predominantly undergraduate body is gone, and with it the need for an outlet of student opinion, and for news of leisurely activities. The Service News will cover all the Army and Navy schools and also the civilian students, but it will not be a Crimson. There will be no editorial policy."
This decision was the natural one at a time when a majority of the staff members, as well as readers, were to be in the Services.
The Service News remains a publication independent within the framework set up by its publishers. The Harvard Crimson.
