A tradition of over 40 years came to an end this week when Charles Townsend Cepeland '82, Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, emeritus, elected to discontinue the series of Christmas readings he had inaugurated at the turn of the century.
Professor Copeland presented the first of the series for a select group of students at the Union.
"No Time for Such Things"
In announcing his intention to cancel this year's reading, Professor Copeland said, "The attention of our young men in taken up with the most important things in the world. I don't think the young men will have the time or inclination for such things."
The 84 year old former Boylston professor denied that his health was the cause of his decision. "My health," asserted Professor Copeland, "is nearly as good as that of any man my age in the country."
