Linemen Prove Victory Margin As Crimson Trounces Worcester

Eleven Avenges '43 Defeat by Techmen

A line which seemed almost to resemble the legendary "seven blocks of granite" provided the margin of victory as the Crimson took the measure of a more experienced Worcester Polytechnic Institute squad by a 13 to 0 score before some 7500 enthusiastic spectators at Soldiers Field Saturday.

In gaining their third straight victory, the Lamarmen reversed the score of their last-season defeat by W.P.I. Only two of the Crimson starters, Paul Garrity and Wally Mroz, remain from the lineup which faced a substantially similar Engineer team last year.

Harvard Line Powerful

The domination of the Harvard line was evidenced by the fact that Worcester's line-plunging fullback and co-captain, Hugo Norige, who ran wild against the Crimson last year, was stopped cold Saturday by the welded armor plate of the forward wall. Especially brilliant was the play of right guard Ed Davis and of right end Walt Coulson, versatile Freshman from Lawrence, who also did most of the punting for the Crimson.

Watching the fray from the sidelines were halfbacks Glenn Schultz, brilliant Freshman from St. Louis, benched with an injured foot, and Marvin "Bill" Jenkins, who is temporarily ineligible. Their combined absence necessitated Garrity's shift to the wingback position. Still in sick bay was right end Rod Perkins, whose shoes were well filled another veteran of last year's team, was a draw, as each man averaged approximately 38 yards per kick.

Harvard's first score came at the very end of the second period, when left end Dana Bresnahan took the ball on an end-around play through right guard for seven yards and a touchdown. Garrity's kick for the extra point was good.

Opportunity Lost

An earlier opportunity to score was muffed, however, when Garrity's attempt to angle a field goal over from the 15-yard line was blocked and recovered by W.P.I.

The only other tally came near the end of the final period, culminating the one sustained march of the day. Taking over on its own 22, the Crimson advanced the ball down to the visitors' four-yard line, by virtue of two passes by tailback Ed Navin to Coulson and to Garrity, and a 20-yard run by Garrity. A ten-yard penalty set them back on the 14, but a Navin-to-Bresnahan pass drove to the two, from which point Cowen scored on two successive line bucks. The touchdown came on fourth down from the one inch line, with only about two minutes remaining in the game.

B Team loses

Balancing the books for the Crimson was the B team, which suffered its second defeat in as many starts with only four minutes to play, but a 30-yard pass by Moulden to Banzardt and a 50-yard run on the same play provided Tufts with the only touchdown of the game, which also took place at Soldiers Field.
