House Basketball League Gets Under Way As Adams And Eliot Are Victors

Gold Coasters Down Lowell, 35-17; Dunsters Folds, 75-39

Taking a headline place in Harvard winter sports because of the curtailed informal basketball schedule and the lack of any hockey whatsoever, the inter-House basketball league made its start last Tuesday on a program, planned by Adolph W. Samborski '26, Director of intramural Athletics, which will end with the winners of each half of the season meeting in a championship playoff.

Adams inaugurated the competition with a 35 to 17 victory over Lowell, while in yesterday's games Eliot ran wild over a hapless Dunster quintet to the time of 75 to 39 and Kirkland forfeited to Lowell.

Led by Bob Berens and Frank Rinaldi, the Gold Coast five was ahead from the opening whistle and remained there until the end. The score was 18-13 at the half; but the men from Lowell had to succumb in the last canto to a superior attack.

Playing the entire first quarter with only four men, the sea-going Elephants from Eliot had little trouble in finding their land legs and led at half-time by 23 points. George Boston, Henry Hibbard, and Jerry Johnson garnered 69 points among them for the whole game, tallying 29. 20. and 20 respectively.

Boston and Hibbard are definitely of Varsity calibre and evidently are too classy for the House league. Boston played ball for Harvard last year, while Hibbard is a transfer from Boston University, where he played in Varsity competition. But since both boys, through College and V-12 rulings, are ineligible for the Varsity, they are able to represent Eliot against the other four Houses.

Samborski, having divided the season into two halves, has scheduled a two-out-of-three series to decide the league champion between the leaders of the halves. The playoff will be held January 24, 25, and 26, if need be.

Because of final exams in February and the vacation in the first week of March, the season has been cut short and provides for each House meeting the other Houses only once during the half.
