First of the new Army Specialized Training unit of 790 which has been expected here for some time, 79 men checked in at Shannon Hall Wednesday afternoon, and took up temporary quarters in Mather Hall of Leverett House.
Immediately upon arrival, part of the group was put to work clearing a vacant lot on the corner of DeWolfe and Mill Streets behind Mather Hall for a drill and athletic field.
This new project is a "leisure-time one," ASTP leaders said, and will be completed during the Unit's spare time; most of Wednesday afternoon was spent cutting weeds chopping trees, and removing stumps.
Although the field is small, it will be used for close-order drill for small groups. A baseball diamond may be laid out on the lot and a set of horseshoe stakes will be put up, but calisthenics will still be held in the Leverett Quadrangle.
The new group, part of a STAR unit from the University of New Hampshire, has been temporarily attached to Company C until further reorganization. Winthrop House is still vacant and will remain so until more of the new unit arrives.
