MOVIEGOER

!!

An all negro-cast, Including Ethel Wates with her voice and warm personality, Rochester and his poker face and mand-paper voice, and Lena Horne with plenty more, plus some hit songs, is what makes this picture worth seeing Louis Armstrong who blows a few notes from deep down might also mentioned.

As always, the movie is not as good as the Broadway show, nor does it rank with the last all-negro production, "Green Pastures". The whole think is, roughly, about the conversion of "Little Joe" from a "no-good-crap shooter" to a "soldier of the Lord." In more detail, it included some very entertaining sequences of hell, and of the angels fighting with Satan's men for Little Joe's questionable soul.

Rochester, in his first real lead part, has earned himself the right to bigger and better parts, while Ethel Waters confirms the opinion of all those who have seen her that she's tops and Lena Horne displays her talents with great skill.

Race riots will never stop pictures like this, whereas pictures like this may help stop race riots.
