MOVIEGOER

!!1/2

Like its New York inspiration, this is a hodge-podge of stars--actors, singers, dancers, band leaders-all rolled up into one supposedly stupendous entity. unlike the real thing, however, the picture lacks that thrill of intimate contact which-insured the success of its real-life predecessor and substitutes a series of Acts, some good, some bad, with just the feeblest at tempt at a unifying theme.

As just a vaudeyille show, however there are some bits well worth seeing. Katherine Cornell's three-minute stint is good, Yehudi Menuhin is excellent, Benny Goodman's vocalist makes with the eyes and torse in a delightful way, and so on down the line to Kay Kyser's nauseating gyrations.

The plot, in general, simply isn't. Hate leads to love in a typical Hollywood fashion, and everything gets mushy at the end. But if you ignore the story and concentrate on the individual performances, you won't be too disappointed.
