Playing without the padding considered so necessary for games of similar roughness, 15 or 20 men will pile down to Soldiers Field tomorrow to hold their first practice in the old and honored game of rugby.

The sport has never been officially recognized by the H. A. A. since Phillip Cabot, professor of Business Administration, organized it in the '20's. No Varsity numerals are given to the men who pick up the bumps and bruises; major athletic credits are their only rewards. Professor Cabot, incidentally, is a non-paid coach, and used to play in New Zealand, where the sport is the equivalent of our football in popularity.

Even without recognition by the H. A. A. the rugby team has done rather well by itself. Over the last four years the club has dropped just one game, and has copped the Eastern Rugby Union League crown consistently. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cornell, the New York Rugby Club, and the Queens Rugby Club all make up teams to compete for the title every year.

A good proportion of the players (last year-it-was 10 out of 15), come from the Business School, as anyone connected with the University is eligible to play. The game seems to attract the big fellows, too. Bobby Green, football captain here in '38 was on last year's team along with Bill Nelson, a football guard from Stanford, and Dick Simpson, another Stanford brute who captained the rugby team last year.

This year the rugbymen face a restricted schedule in line with those of other sports. Plans for the season include no away from home games at all, but the club, which will be built around a nucleus of three returning men, is slated to face a team of New Zealand sailors in the near future and will follow that contest up with others against similar British units as they happen to be in Boston.

The captain for the coming season, to be picked sometime the week, will have to whip his team into shape to meet the one intercollegiate rival on the docket, Yale, which is tentatively sending a team up later in the season date undecided.
