In cooperation with the Army, the Harvard Mountaineering Club has been testing equipment in Tuckerman's Ravine in New Hampshire. This wartime boost is just a continuation of action started in 1942.
At the request of Colonel L. O. Grice of the QMC, a group of Harvard and Alpine Clubbers organized a joint testing expedition of static and mobile equipment. The Crimson Mountaineers had used photographs of Army Observers, have been landed by bombers, and have been parachuted food in their conquest of various mountains in Alaska.
In 1942 a trek up Mt. McKinley was made for the testing of sleeping bags, tents, stoves, skis, and snowshoes. If a man was uncomfortable in a sleeping bag at 24 degrees below, if a pressure cooker exploded, observations were noted and the information was radioed to Washington
