In the fall of 1941 the CIO was running an organizing campaign at the Bethlehem Fore River Shipyard. Many Harvard men may remember that a Fore River Student Labor Committee was organized here to help the union in canvassing workers, passing out leaflets, and other educational work. Over a hundred men participated.

The CIO union lost the NLRB election that year, and the yard has remained unorganized. But this fall the two years which the Wagner Act demands must elapse between NLRB plant elections will be up, and the CIO has already started a new organizing drive. And the task is all the more important today because of the disgraceful production muddle existing at Fore River, of which much-publicized "absenteeism" is one manifestation. It is imperative that a responsible union become bargaining agent for the workers if the problems which now cripple production are to be solved.

Harvard men are again called upon by the CIO to help. We therefore urge all students to join in forming a new Fore River Student Labor Committee. Here is an opportunity for much-needed contact between college men and organized labor, for first-hand experience and understanding which will be vital in the post-war world, And above all, this is a war activity, a direct contribution to increasing production for victory.
