Strong Eli Swimmers Poor Yale Five Edges

Ford Breaks Record In 50-Yard Sprint

Not quite so patent as advance notices has predicted, a strong Yale swimming team, sinasing only one record en route, downed the Crimson mermen 50 to 25 before a large crowd at the Indoor Athletic Building Saturday night.

The national champion Bulldogs boasted fine talent in the 50- and 100-yard free style (two men named Alan Ford and Brewster-Macfadden), but their ability elsewhere was not so deep.

There was never any doubt as to the ultimate winner, Yale leading from the outset. But Harvards' Dave Barnes pleased his many friends in the crowd and surprised the Elis no little with the only double victory of the night--an amazingly narrow win in the 220, and an easier victory in the 440.

Ford Shatters Record

Ford, holder of the world record in the 100-yard event, nosed out Macfadden in the 50 in 22.9 seconds, tieing the accepted national collegiate mark and shattering the Harvard pool record set by Charley Hutter in 1937.

Macfadden, profiting on a poor turn by Ford, edged out his rival in the 100 in the good, but not record-breaking, time of 52.1. Blue natators took every other event on the card, but Crimson swimmers, notably Barnes and George Christman, who placed in both the 220 and 440, gave good performances.

Harvey Pastel's best diving effort of the season failed to win by just five-tenths of a point, and Bill Hewes took third. Captain Johnnny Eusden, obscured by Ford and Macfadden, took two thirds. Don Ulen and Bob Aaron placed two-three in the breast stroke, while Gibby King was third in the backstroke event.
