RUNNERS BEAT ANDOVER MEN

Royal Blue Captured Only Two Events in Indoor Meet

Stepping up their tempo of attack a mixed Harvard track group turned a mid-meet tie into a complete victory by defeating Andover 51 1/2 to 29 1/2 yesterday afternoon at Andover. The Royal Blue took only two events although they faced the most depleted Crimson track squad in years.

Bill Palson led the list of Harvard high-scorers, capping the 1000 at 2:26.4, while his teammates Tim Coggeshall and Cliff Downer followed closely in the same event in a brilliant sweep which put the Crimson well out in the lead. Substantial scores had already been piled up by Jack Hunter and Eddie Smith by their action in the hurdles, plus the swift stepping of Moe Young in the dash.

Big surprise in the meet came when Lex Rogerson and Ward Slingerland respectively beat and tied famed Andover star Beasley in an exciting pole vault event. It was Slingerland's second official trial in vaulting.

Later in the meet when the Crimson fell into, its stride, Wally Chubb easily took the 600, Bob Hopkins won the high jump at 5 feet, 10 inches, and Tom Holyoke and Bob Schneider doubled in the broad jump. Hudner and Herron in the 300 and shotput were the only Royal Blue first-place coppers.
