WASHINGTON--American troops killed 6066 Japanese--a ratio of about 18 Japs killed for every American lost--in the final four weeks offensive on Guadalcanal, the Navy announced today.
Significantly a Navy communique reported that only 127 prisoners were taken as two columns of U.S. troops moved through the douse wooded sections of the island and converged at Cape Esperance, from which the Japanese evacuated their few remaining soldiers--most of them officers.
The new estimate of Jap losses in the final weeks of the offensive brought total enemy casualties since the U.S. Marines invaded Guadalcanal to about 15,000, based on official Navy communiques.
