Six Crimson swimmers prepared for future Ivy League competition at the Worcester Boys Club this weekend, completely dominating the two-day championship held there. Sprinter John Eusden, in winning three events, set two New England junior records, and Dave Barnes chalked up two more in the 220 and 440 free style races.
Eusden took the 50 yard event in 25 seconds fit for one new mark, with Ossle Morton second and Perry Stearns third. His record-breaking time in the 100 was 56.3, and he was again followed by Morton and Stearns. Big John's third victory came in the 150 yard individual medley race, a combination breast stroke, back stroke, free style event, with Bob Aaron second.
Ulen's Son Wins
Barnes' 440 feat was accomplished in 5:08.3, just half-a-second better than the previous record of Bill Delima '31. The 220 record time was 2:22.4. No other Crimson swimmer was entered in either event.
Coach Hal Ulen's son Don triumphed in the 220 yard breast stroke event, winning in 3:07. Bob Aaron took first in the dive, and the Crimson medley relay team placed fourth. This event and the 150 yard backstroke, in which there were no Harvard entrants, were the only races not won by a Ulen representative.
Relay Team Breaks Record
To climax the meet, a free style relay team composed of Barnes, Stearns, Ulen and Morton broke still another New England junior record, drowning all opposition in 1:45.4.
Undefeated in four starts, two of which have been League competition, the swimmers will next face Columbia, in a meet scheduled for February 13 at the Lions' pool. Coach Ulen is searching for another backstroker, now that Captain Bill Drucker is to be graduated. Don Hartwell holds down one lane, and Dave Smith may be granted the other berth.
