MOVIEGOER

!!!

The sheer weight of the names on the marquee is enough to sweep you into Keith's Memorial this week. And the movie endeavours mightily to give you your money's worth by presenting three tales of the supernatural against a very agreeable background of Benchley.

The first one gives Betty Fields a chance to act, and on that account alone is top-notch. It could even be a very good story if the moral, Beauty is a Force Within You, weren't pointed too obviously and too often. The second is also about a Force Within You, but this is a Force of a different color, an evil one. This Force appears as the mirror image of Edward G. Robinson and by its continual wise-cracking turns the story into a parody in spite of the intentions of the writer and the efforts of the actor. The third story, by avoiding the obvious and the general in its script, is by far the best of the lot. Charles Boyer, as a tight-rope performer, has a role second only to Betty Field's female Scrooge, and Barbara Stanwyek gives him compotent support. The plot has its intriguing angle and even succeeds in making itself seem plausible.
