GRID SEASON OPENS ON 26TH

Crowley Brings Navy Pre-Flight Men Here

"Sleepy Jim" Crowley, former Fordham coach and now head mentor of the North Carolina Naval Pre-Flight School team, will bring a powerful, star-studded squad to Soldiers Field to provide the opposition for the Crimson gridders' first start of the season on Saturday, September 26.

The game will be a tradition shatterer in many respects, since it will be the first time in many years that a Harvard team has played its opening game before the official start of College and the first time since World War I that a service team has been its opponent.

Three of the players who helped Fordham to win a 2-0 victory over Missouri in the Sugar Bowl last year will be on the navy squad: star tailback Len Eshmont, end Vince Dennery, and tackle Hudacek.

Besides these Rams, Crowley has "Sweet" Lalanne, North Carolina halfback who was named on many All-American teams, Lou Bufalino, who was Cornell's most effective back against Harvard last fall, and Landsburg, a Sophomore star for the Big Red last season. Alabama's former excellent kicker, Sanford, is expected to handle this department capably for the navy team.

Last week they defeated Catawba College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 13 to 2. Observers felt that although the pre-flight students could probably have run up a larger score, they were not well-organized as yet.
