Yanks Stop Two Air Assaults

WASHINGTON--U. S. Marine and Naval forces, firmly entrenched in six islands of the Solomon group, have shot down seven more Japanese planes in hurling back two strong enemy air attacks on American positions in the strategic Southwestern Pacific islands, the Navy Department announced tonight.

The latest successes of the hard-hitting American Naval and Marine pilots raised to at least 111 the number of Japanese planed officially reported shot down in the area since American Marines attacked the Solomons on August 7 to start the first American offensive of the war.
