On Wednesday afternoon, 102 men participated in a House Relay Carnival of six events which Adolph Samborski '26, director of House athletics, called "highly successful". Lowell was the winner, followed by Kirkland and Eliot.
All Varsity track men were eligible to compete and their participation brightened up what might otherwise have been a rather slow and dull meet.
Halfway through the carnival, track coach Jaako Mikkola presented three improvement prizes and a quarter-mile trophy. The improvement prizes went to Pete Garland and Frank Coolidge, stars of last year's '45 team, and to Varsity discus thrower Jack Bonner who was not there to receive his award. Bill Ellis, also absent, was announced the winner of the Westmore Wilcox quarter mile trophy.
Lowell Wins Four Events
Some of the many Varsity men who competed were Garland, track captain Don MacKinnon, Ted Withington, 440 star on the '45 squad, Fred Phinney, cross-country captain, Max Pincus who runs the 600, and hurdler Wes Flint.
Lowell's team made a phenomenal record, winning four events and placing second and third in the other two for a total of 46 points.
Kirkland Second With 26
After Lowell came Kirkland with 26, Eliot with 24, Winthrop 22, Dunster 11, Dudley 6, and Leverett 5 points. The points were awarded on an 8, 6, 4, 3, 2, basis respectively, for the first five places.
Some of the outstanding men in the meet were: for Eliot Morgan, Withington and Goldberg; for Dunster De Rham, Allen, and Loos; for Leverett Marshal and Baldwin; for Dudley MacKinnon; and for Kirkland Pincus, Morgan, and Rich.
