Arthur Sampson, former assistant coach of Crimson football teams and columnist on the Boston Herald, was yesterday named by William J. Bingham '16 to manage relations between the press and the football team next fall.
Sampson will take over his duties on September 1 and will continue his newspaper work. Last night at the Herald he stated that he had not yet completely formulated his plans. "This is really an emergency," he added. "I"m just filling in for the year."
A graduate of Tufts in 1921, Sampson coached Maryland football in 1931-3 under Eddie Casey. Before that he was assistant to Lou Little at Columbia, and earlier coached football and basketball at Tufts and Medford High. He has been on the Herald for 13 years.
The need for a capable man to handle football publicity was created by the calling of Arthur Wild to Washington to work with Pan-American relations. Wild will be unable to return to Harvard for full-time work before December.
