Russ Ford, a right-hander the likes of whom the Freshman team had not seen all season long, gave up a measly two hits to the Yardlings at New Haven yesterday, and the Elis capitalized in one big inning to subdue the Crimson 2 to 0.
A ground single to right field by losing pitcher Jim Mains in the fifth and a pretty drag bunt by Jim Apthorp in the sixth comprised the entire '45 offense. Ford struck out nine Yardlings, and walked only two men.
Mains Allows Six Hits
Mains himself had a good day, allowing six singles, whiffing three, and issuing four passes. But in the fifth inning Ford helped his own cause with a single to right, and romped home on Hacker Noyes' towering triple to right-center. Noyes tallied on Bill Howe's single. Except for that outburst, Mains kept the Bulldogs well in hand, and no man reached third base thereafter.
So air-tight was Ford's performance that only two Yardlings got as far as second base, and third base was undented by Crimson spikes all afternoon. Coach Adolph Samborski's charges thus ended their season at the .500 mark, with seven wins and seven losses.
