In choosing the field in which he intends to devote the majority of his time and interest for the rest of his college career, many a Freshman finds himself undecided as to which way to turn. The accompaning articles were written after talking to upperclassmen in each field and finding out their opinions, and are offered to the Class of 1945 and any others as a guide in making the choice.
Under the changing conditions of the present war emergency the selection of a field of concentration becomes increasingly difficult. Few men will stay in college for four years and pursue the normal course of study, while many will be here only two years. Thus it is advisable to take the important courses and plan to get as much education as possible in four terms. The University is offering special war courses but unless you have special aptitude for electronics or some such specialized subject, don't dive headlong into it. Elementary Math and Physics will be helpful in the Army or Navy, but beyond that they train their own men.
Many combined fields and small fields are not discussed in these articles, and students who are not satisfied with the ordinary selection can find practically any combination they want if they arrange their prospective program with the Department heads. Above all take a field you like and in which you are interested if you can find one, for the work will be much easier. To choose Economics because it might be useful in business and not because you like it is the kind of mistake many make and later regret.
On the other hand be sure to take enough distribution courses to give a rounded education. Over concentration is an evil the University has tried to correct and should certainly be avoided. Those who chose History or English should certainly take a course in Math or Physics and vice versa.
At least before making the final decision every Freshman should find out all about his field. You can always change later and are not bound to your choice, but it is a considerable disadvantage to do so.
