GRANT FOR NIEMAN FELLOWS EXTENDED

In spite of war conditions, the Nieman Fellowships will be awarded again next year to qualified newspapermen, it was announced yesterday by the Foundation.

Several acceptable men have already applied, the statement revealed, and up to 15 scholarships will be granted, depending upon the number of promising candidates.

Awarded to men experienced in any branch of newspaper, work on the basis of their future usefulness to the industry, the Fellowships provide a year of instruction in the University.

Free Choice of Field

No restrictions are placed on the projects which the Fellows may pursue. Most of them, however, concentrate in a field that will give them a background for their newspaper work.

Nothing that in the past years most of the men selected have been in the main branches of journalism, the Foundation stated that the pressure of war news this year may give men in special departments an opportunity to apply.

Applications for each Fellowship have always far exceeded the number of candidates that could be chosen. The committee choosing the fellows thus expects that this year, despite the war, a representative selection will still be possible.

In the four years since the Foundation was established, fifty men have been awarded Fellowships. This year, there are 15 newspapermen in the University, coming from all parts of the country, and representing nine different phases of newspaper work
