Newman Elected To Student Council, Heads Draft List

Late last night the Student Council announced that Harry Newman, Jr. '42 had been elected unanimously to take the place of Harrison T. Blaine '42 on the Council, who resigned because he was "too much work."

The announcement came as a fitting ending to a hectic day for Newman, which had opened with his topping the list of Harvard eligibles in the recent draft lottery. His serial number, 1103, was the second local capsule to be drawn from the fishbowl.

His numerous activities have won him the title of "busiest man in Harvard College," and include presidency of Phillips Brooks and the Senior Album, and membership in the recently-elected Permanent Class Committee.

Stunned by the unexpected deluge of publicity caused by his luck in the drawing, he modestly tried to dodge friends who gathered to wish him God speed. "It's the first time I've ever won a lottery in my life," he sighed.
